NN5 Production Update from the factory :
More than 20 NN5 beta units have been field tested by professional or expert panographers for more than a month. While they all agreed NN5 was an excellent pano head, they also gave me lots of feedbacks and suggestions to make it even better. Most of their suggestions have been implemented in the production model, except for the 15 degree vertical detent mechanism. While many of the beta testers found the vertical detent very useful for spherical panos, others found the need of more flexibility in shooting at other angular intervals, e.g. when making high resolution mosaics.
The current design only allows full-time "on" or "off" for the vertical detent. Changing its status is troublesome and time consuming. To get the maximum benefit, I decide to redesign the vertical detent mechanism. In a prototype, a "switch" that can turn on or off the detent on the fly without any tool has been successfully implemented. To incorporate it in the final NN5 design, a new mold and new castings need to be made. This will take several months. Feedbacks from beta testers also showed that a significant portion of panographers only shoot high resolution mosaics, the 15 degree vertical detent is hardly useful for them.
In view of this I decide to release an "NN5L (Lite)" at a lower price.
Except for the lack of vertical detent, NN5L (Lite is the same as NN5. Current NN5 Lite owners can upgrade to NN5 by just paying the price difference once NN5 is out.
Features include:
* Longer arms (about 40mm longer than NN3). This helps to accommodate larger cameras like the D3 or MK II, MK III, and cameras with battery packs. Larger lenses like 17-40mm or 70-200mm F2.8 can also easily be accommodated .
* Supports up to 7kgs .
* Very precise detent mechanism.
* As small as 10 degree stops in lower arm rotator are possible. Detent rings can be disabled on the fly without any tool.
* More precise rotator base with locking function.
* Angular increment of 2.5 degree in the rotators' markings, good for making high resolution mosaics.
* 4 rail stops for "remembering" camera and lens settings.
* All NN5L's will come with the 10/12, 30/36, 45/60, 90/120 ring plus free case;
